| Posted on 10/11/06I often question the value for survey respondents of “Quick Polls” offered by many online survey sites. My thinking goes two ways on these mini polls.
(1) Online survey sites don’t really care about the results of quick polls—they are just trying to get panelists involved in the site. (I have seen some quick polls accumulate over 100,000 votes.)
(2) Survey companies use the responses to profile the diversity of their members when making sales pitches to potential clients. ("Ms. CEO, you should know 42 percent of our panelists, Hand out candy to all the trick or treaters."
I submit to you the following questions and answers from recent polls on several popular online survey companies:

44%—3-5 hours
15%—6 or more hours

47%—Yes
53%—No
Lightspeed Consumer Panel Poll:Which of the following will you do to celebrate Halloween?

2%—Catch a local parade or hayride
11%—Pick and carve a pumpkin
8%—Attend a costume party
2%—Visit a haunted landmark
4%—Accumulate as much candy as possible
